THE INTERVIEW PROJECT 49: Jennah Barry

jennahbarry

BIO: The daughter of a choir director and the hardest working man in Nova Scotia, Jennah Barry is a singer, songwriter and musician.

After watching her video for Slow Dance, and on a whim, I decided to contact Jennah Barry though the most antiquated form of messaging service available, Facebook.

At the time, she was in the throwes of the East Coast Music Awards and playing on the RBC Breakout Stage. I promised her a review and she promised to answer the Kraken 10. Here is both of those promises come true:

Overall:

Jenny Barry’s album Young Men is a collection of heartfelt heartmelts and wine stained anthems drenched with the smell of the ocean and sincerity. It’s an album that brings all the boys to the yard, sits them down, and tells them what they are missing and what she missed. Nova Scotia’s daughter to the water, Jennah Barry still holds a smile and tune through the rain.

Song run:

The Coast: A siren song of haunts and taunts that flow up to the shore and becon you with choral wonder. Lyrically strong and sentimentally drenched.

Dead Give Away: Cute and sincere with a driven spine of drum and rock. A triumphant swell followed by a subtle hook that makes ghosts pay attention.

Black Hole: A stumple away escape song that lurches and sways towards another place. An equal part longing and frustration. Straight up and straight away.

Honey: Honey is hand in hand with honesty. “Losing brings out the worst in me, but I’ll do what I must.” Hope sings internal; ballad for moving on.

Sheriff: Drunken sway of pleading and face holding. Steel guitar saving you from you the man in the way of your man. Tantric vocals tell you things you already know.

4 x 4: It is hard to describe that feeling of love and loss and the things therein, each of themselves, spinning against what propels them. Arm and in arm through the woods we go.

Slow Dance: If only I could have written this song. I would have been the man my mother always wanted me to be.

JENNANSWERS:

If you would give yourself a nickname what would it be?

Bruiser.

If you could switch one body part with anyone else in the world living or dead, who and what would it be?

Popeye’s forearms.

In five words, describe your most uncomfortable dream.

This is a very intimate question.

What is your favourite word?

Shit.

What does that word smell like?

Ha!

What is your spirit animal?

Grizzly Bear.

If ghosts existed, would you want to meet one? If so, what would you ask it?

Yes.
The obvious questions. And I’d ask for a favour.

If you could share a bottle of alcohol with anyone who has ever existed, who would it be and what would you drink?

Ernest Hemingway; whatever he was drinking.

What would you rather have as a pet: A dragon, a unicorn Pegasus or Ezra Levant?

Dragon.

Finally, if you could live your life over again with guaranteed success, what would you do?”

Hide.
